About Northwest Dog
This is a personal account of our experiences raising a dog in the great Pacific Northwest.
Welcome to NorthwestDog.com
We are a small, new family who drew the “difficult” card with our pet, a German Shepherd named Gunner. He’s a cherished member of our household who has been plagued with digestive problems. Dumbfounded by the “advice” of pet store employees and expensive but ineffective veterinarians, we took his health into our own hands. Through research, networking and a little luck we are finally on our way to healthy dog.
Any doctor or personal trainer will tell you the key to your health is diet. A dog is no different. This is a catalog of our experiences with the transition to a Raw Meat Diet for our dog as well as the Products, Sources, and Information we rely on. I hope you find the site useful. If you have questions or comments please post!
A few notes on Raw Feeding,
When researching any topic it is always valuable to identify the stakeholders within the subject matter. In other words WHO has WHAT to gain? I’m a capitalist at heart; I believe in a free economy and love America. I also know that “commercially available” doesn’t qualify something as “good”.
The most important thing I considered when researching this decision was: WHO am I getting my information from and WHAT do they have to gain? Even shallow research will quickly help you see why Veterinarian offices carry and push “prescription food”. I’m not saying their intentions are ill; on the contrary, they’ve dedicated their lives to helping animals which is a noble feat! However, there is a conflict of interest in regards to some of the materials and sponsors that assist in their training. What percentage of revenue to you think a vet’s office accounts for in Food Sales?
Raw Diets have been thoroughly debated for years now and both sides, those for raw feeding and those against raw feeding, are deeply entrenched in their opinions. Dr. Tom Lonsdale’s book “Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health” was one of the first comprehensive, expert-created resources available and still boasts a fantastic reputation for being accurate and objective. There are now a multitude of online resources available that support the logic and benefits of Raw Feeding your animal. One such resource I have found highly useful is the website: Raw Fed.
I would recommend this as the first stop for anyone considering a positive change in their pet’s health.
On the other hand, you can find plenty of information on why you should continue to feed your pets cooked, grain-based kibble on the back of any dog food bag or the latest Iams commercial…
