Stop dogs from shedding
Shedding is certainly one of the most annoying things your dog can do. He can’t help it, and you didn’t expect it. This much at least…
Here are a few strategies for stopping the dog from shedding:
1. Proactive brushing.
If you can see the hair on the floor its already to late! Regular brushing will accelerate shedding a bit and help your dog get used to the process. If you’re lucky, start to enjoy it.
2. Purchase a high quality brush.
Sometimes in life you’ve go to invest a bit to get the best result. This is one of those times! The “Furmenator” we bought in 2009 is going strong and hasn’t shown any signs of wear.
3. Feed high quality food.
Yes, Raw Food proponents believe that an all raw diet will drastically reduce shedding and improve coat feel and shine. I agree, but if you are sticking with kibble use a supplement.
4. Include a fatty acid supplement.
5. Bathe the dog every month or so.
In addition to keeping the dog smelling right, a good wash helps release some of the stubborn undercoat that doesn’t come out with regular brushing. Especially in the summer.
Yes… unfortunately there is only one way to completely prevent your dog from shedding: Shave it!
